Phoenix from the ashes! A Year of Resilience.

Scalding hot and destructive flames ravaged the Mabalingwe landscape, consuming it piece by piece. A year ago this month, tragedy struck the Mabalingwe Reserve as a wildfire rapidly spread across the reserve, leaving over 80% of the natural environment devastated and reducing 56 private houses to ashy rubble. Fortunately, there were no human casualties in the battle against the fire, and we remain grateful that animal fatalities were minimal.

Till today, we extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who supported us during this challenging time. Whether through donations or heartfelt condolence messages, your unwavering support has meant the world to us. We are also thankful and give praise to God for the protection of our people and more than enough rain for the restoration of our veld.

Grazing

As we ended the year 2023, predictions of an impending El Niño threatened to exacerbate the already dire situation. Experts warned of a dry season ahead, with little hope for the veld to recover properly. Yet, in a miraculous turn of events, nature had other plans. Instead of drought, we were blessed with bountiful rain, replenishing our dams and revitalizing the veld. The resilience of nature never ceases to amaze.

Today, the bushveld stands as a testament to nature's enduring spirit. The scars of the past have healed, and the landscape is teeming with life. Our animal populations are thriving, and we've been fortunate to witness some Rare Sights at Mabalingwe Game Reserve that remind us of the raw beauty and diversity of our ecosystem.

Construction

Amidst the challenges of navigating insurance claims and rebuilding efforts for the homes lost in the fire, the spirit of Mabalingwe remained unwavering. Standing together, some owners already managed to get their insurance settlements out. Other homeowners have taken the courageous step of rebuilding, despite waiting on their claims to pay out.

Thanks to the efforts of Boschcon Construction, a few homes have already been restored to their former glory. As we continue to move forward together, our collective dedication to rebuilding and restoring Mabalingwe to its original splendour remains unwavering.

Business as usual for humans and animals alike

After the fire, some guests hesitated to return to the reserve due to the damage inflicted upon the beautiful landscape. There were even rumours that the reserve’s gates might remain closed indefinitely.

This uncertainty not only impacted commercial entities but also weighed heavily on property owners who relied on rental income. Fortunately, we are grateful to report that for the most part, operations have resumed as normal, and we are back in full swing. However, we empathize with those owners who are still in the process of rebuilding their homes and we sincerely hope that their doors will reopen soon.

Perhaps the most heartening aspect of this journey is the resurgence of wildlife within the reserve. We may have taken the beauty of our surroundings for granted in the past, but now, every blade of grass, every warthog grunt and snort, is a symbol of gratitude and renewal.

Nature rebuilt Mabalingwe faster than we ever could!

We remind our guests that nature is delicate and that even a small spark can lead to immense destruction. When you visit Mabalingwe Game Reserve, please remain vigilant; never leave a fire unattended, always dispose of cigarette butts in a fire-safe container, and keep flammable products away from heat or fire. Together, let’s avoid repeating the events of 2023 and instead build and preserve our reserve for a greener and better future for all.
